How elevators work

How an elevator works

The most popular elevator design is the roped elevator.  When the button is pushed the motor of the elevator is activated. Depends of what button is pushed the motor created motion to the selected direction. The motion through a strong rope often made by steel runs up over a pulley allowing the elevator car to be raised or lowered.  A weight in the opposite side of the pulley keeps the balance of the elevators weight.

Original patent diagram showing how the safety brake of an elevator works drawn by Elisha Graves Otis in 1861
